Maintenance Tips & Safety
Keep your garage door and gate systems running smoothly and safely. Learn some simple DIY tips and know when it's time to call the experts at S.Y.M.
Simple DIY Maintenance You Can Do
Visual Inspection (Monthly)
Look over your garage door and gate system. Check for loose hardware, worn rollers, frayed cables (DO NOT TOUCH frayed cables), and ensure tracks are clear of debris. Listen for unusual sounds during operation.
Safety Note: Keep hands and fingers away from moving parts. If you see major issues like broken springs or frayed cables, call a professional immediately.
Lubrication (Bi-Annually)
Lubricate moving parts like rollers, hinges, and springs (torsion springs often have specific lubrication points). Use a garage door-specific lubricant. This reduces noise and extends part life.
Safety Note: Consult your door/opener manual for recommended lubricants and points. Avoid over-lubricating.
Test Safety Features (Monthly)
For garage doors, test the auto-reverse mechanism by placing a 2x4 board flat on the ground in the door's path. The door should reverse upon contact. Test photo-eye sensors by waving an object through the beam while the door is closing; it should reverse.
Safety Note: If safety features fail, discontinue use and call S.Y.M. immediately. This is crucial for preventing accidents.
Keep Tracks Clean
Ensure the tracks for your garage door or sliding gate are clean and free from dirt, debris, or obstructions. This allows for smoother operation.
Safety Note: Do not attempt to adjust misaligned tracks yourself; this requires professional expertise.
